7 Things men should know about menstruation period in Nigeria

Discussions surrounding periods surfaced on twitter Nigeria lately.

Since the recession started, women have complained about the high cost of sanitary products, and also how difficult it has made life for them. Usually, menstruation is a topic that is hush-hush in the Nigerian society, for fear of making men uncomfortable.

Some men asked why women couldn’t use tissue papers or rags if sanitary products are too expensive for them to purchase.

Well, we’re here to let you should know about menstruation period in Nigeria.

1. A period is a perfectly natural process


Every month, a woman’s body prepares for a baby. The lining of the womb becomes thicker in order to be able to provide nutrition for a fertilised egg. When fertilisation does not occur, the body sheds this lining. The lining of the womb comes out as blood through the vagina. This is known as menstruation.

2. Some women experience PMS

PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome, and it means that in the days leading up to her period, might experience a series of symptoms including but not limited to mood swings, acne, bloating, tender breasts, and irritability.

3. Cramps hurt a lot

It’s not a pleasant experience and feels like a little monster tearing up everything inside you. Cramps render some women incapacitated.

4. Period products makes periods more comfortable

Most period products such as pads or tampons work by locking the blood in and preventing it from leaking out. Using rags or tissue papers means that the blood is more likely to leak out and cause stains.

5. Menstruation doesn’t involve the loss of an extreme amount of blood

Menstrual blood does not just flow out of women like water from a river. On average, women lose about a cup of blood when they’re on their periods.

6. Periods comes in cycles

The first day of a woman’s cycle begins on the day her period comes. The average cycle lasts about 28-30 days. It could be as short as 21 in some women.

7. Periods doesn’t last that long

Period do last for as short as 2 days, and as long as 7 days. In most cases, women’s periods last between 5 and 7 days.
